Your first class

What a class feels like.

Every class is built from the same set of elements, so it quickly feels familiar, and each one is there for a reason. Here is what a class might look like.

  1. 01

    Warmup

Mobilise and focus attention, so you arrive in your body before you ask anything of it.

  2. 02

    Strength training

Rings, bars and weights, all on clear progressions, so the base under everything you do keeps rising.

  3. 03

    Locomotion

Animal movement, ground work, natural movement. Strength, range and balance cooperating while you travel, with the perception to adjust as you go.

  4. 04

    Movement puzzles & games

A situation instead of an instruction. Where you find out what you reach for without thinking.

In their words

People who started where you are.

“Training at Totum has been brilliant. Scott's knowledge of the connection between strength and mobility has changed the way I train, the atmosphere is welcoming and friendly, and the precision in skill work is awesome. Not to mention the playful aspects and community feeling woven into it all. Thanks for creating a wonderful place to train, I really look forward to each class and can't recommend it highly enough!”
Catherine Deans
“I've never been very interested in conventional gyms. Despite being an active person, I just can't get motivated to do repetitive, boring exercises just because I feel like I should. When I met Scott through a friend while visiting Tassie a few summers ago and he told me about Totum, I thought: this is the kind of gym I'd like to go to. I later moved to Hobart and signed up right away. I was immediately captivated by the playful, welcoming, supportive atmosphere, and the variety and inventiveness of Scott's classes. His depth of knowledge is impressive. Totum has become a community to be part of and a regular rhythm to my weeks. I've gone from never having tried handstands to sometimes holding a free-standing handstand for a few seconds. I'm grateful to be part of the Totum community, and I can't wait to see where it takes me.”
Jon Leighton
“This place is life changing. I've been coming for six months and feel so many benefits. I'm stronger, more mobile and flexible, and the classes lift my spirits and bring a sense of fun and play to my day. Scott clearly has a wealth of knowledge and experience in movement, and he brings it to the design of every class. Who knew exercise could be so much fun and thought provoking. And just as importantly, the tribe of fellow movers are welcoming, supportive and fun loving.”
Nerida Plumpton
“Totum Movement is much more than a gym, it's a community hub where we support each other in our movement practice and celebrate each other's wins. Spanning strength, stretching, creative movement and much more, it's a full-body and mind challenge and expression. Huge thanks to Scott for nurturing such a welcoming and fun space!”
Emily Sheppard
“Delivers an awesome movement/strength/skills program which is so much more interesting and fun compared to 'regular' gyms. There are progressions for all abilities and Scott is super friendly and really knows his stuff.”

Before you book

The things people ask first.

A few of the most common questions. If yours is not here, just ask, we are happy to help.

Do I need any experience?

None at all. Every class runs on progressions, so you always work at a level that is challenging but doable for you, never measured against the person next to you. If you are happy to sweat a little, laugh, and try things you have not done before, you will fit right in. Body Prep is the gentlest place to start.

I'm not very fit, flexible, or strong. Is this for me?

Yes. Our students range from complete beginners to long-time movers, often in the same room. What they have in common is curiosity and a willingness to show up. The progressions keep you working at the right level for you, so you are never holding anyone up or being left behind.

Which class should I start with?

Body Prep. It covers the joint prep, spinal work, and strength and mobility basics that everything else is built on. If another class genuinely excites you more, start there instead. The best class is the one you will actually keep coming to.

I have an injury. Can I still train?

Usually, yes. We scale and modify, and movement done with attention is often one of the best things for a recovering body. Let Scott know what is going on before class and you will work around it together. If you would rather check first, send a message and we will talk it through.

What should I bring, and what happens when I arrive?

Comfortable clothes you can move fully in, and a water bottle. We train barefoot for most things, so leave the shoes at the door. Come five or ten minutes early for your first class so Scott can say hello, learn a little about you, and point you to the right starting level.

How is Totum different from a regular gym?

Most gyms sit you on a machine and work one body part at a time. Here you build strength and range, learn to control it through skills and movement, then use it in situations you cannot plan for. It is a practice you get better at for life, not a workout you grit your teeth through. The approach explains how it fits together.

Can I start any week, or do I need to wait for a new block?

Any week. Programming rotates through the year, but every session meets you at your own level, so you can begin whenever you are ready and pick up the thread from there. There is no wrong time to start.

What actually happens in a class?

Every class draws from the same six elements: strength training and mobility, skill practice and locomotion, and movement puzzles, games and improvisation. Not every class uses all of them, and the mix differs by class type, but the rhythm stays familiar.

What's the difference between the Primer and the 2 Weeks Unlimited?

Both are good first steps. The 2 Weeks Unlimited gives you fourteen days of full access to explore every class and find what fits your week. The Primer runs for 28 days and adds a private 1:1, where we set up your program, find your starting progressions, and give you a clear focus from day one. Choose the Primer if you would rather begin with direction than find your own way in.

Can I pause or cancel later?

Yes, and there are no lock-in contracts. Recurring memberships ask for a two-month minimum and two weeks' notice by email to pause or cancel. Pauses need a set return date rather than being open-ended. The full policy is in our Membership Agreement.
